Cavan is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets

Cavan is one of those counties in Ireland that can often get overlooked and I am not really sure why. The county is part of Ireland’s Ancient East and Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. Cavan offers visitors a treasure trove of beautiful scenery, historical sites and amazing outdoor adventures. From golfing and horse riding to great food and traditional music nights, Cavan has it all.

Lakeland County

Cavan boasts no less than 365 lakes, making it the go-to county for angling enthusiasts. There’s a lake for everyday of the year! The River Shannon, the River Erne and the Shannon-Erne Canal are all located in the county, so not only is fishing a popular pasttime, but leisurely boat trips and endless water sports activities are too.

Heritage

If you are interested in Irish history and culture, this county has plenty to interest you. Visits to Drumlane Monastic Site in Milltown, Clogh Oughter Castle and awarding-winning Cavan museum are highly recommended. The Marble Arch Caves on the Cavan/Fermanagh border allow visitors to explore the natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers of Europe’s finest show-caves. The Geopark in the west of the county offers an insight into the geology, archaeology, heritage and culture of West Cavan.

The Cavan Way

Not only will you find hundreds of acres of walking parks in Cavan, you also have the wonderful Cavan Way. This is a 26km national waymarked walking trail full of wonderful experiences, taking  you though charming villages, forest parks, lakesides and mountain paths, with stunning scenery surrounding your every move.
