Themed Bed & Breakfast - Lakeland Midsummer

Lakeland Midsummer LakehouseProperty Name: Lakeland & Midsummer Lakehouse

Theme: Angling

Lakeland & Midsummer Lakehouse has a lovely ring to it, like some wonderful rural escape that you would read about in a novel.  But this is not fiction, it is everything you could imagine it to be, friendliness, good food, comfort and relaxation in a lakeside setting, yet the picturesque village of Oughterard is just a few minutes away.

The doors of Lakeland & Midsummer Lakehouse were opened to guests in 1966 by Lal and Mary Faherty.  Having grown up in this quiet peaceful haven and with the love of casting a line it was inevitable that daughter Anne along with her husband Gary would continue this long standing tradition of warmth, hospitality and great fishing. Recent work on this modern home has taken full advantage of its close proximity to the waters edge with French doors leading from each of the lake view suites out onto decking overlooking the lapping waters of Portacarron Bay.  Anne still has the support of her parents next door, Mary makes delicious cakes, breads, scones, jams & chutneys, and when in season she provides organic vegetables and fruit from her garden and Lal can advise on fishing when necessary, but Anne and Gary are both quite the experts at Angling themselves.   Obviously fishing is to the fore here, but there is plenty to do for those who enjoy the other aspects of Lake life, such as the archaeology, flora & fauna, swimming and canoeing.  Visit St Brigit’s garden & learn of Celtic mythology & folklore, Aughnanure Castle; a spot of golf perhaps a countryside walk or horseriding, these are all available in the area.

The experience here is truly a ‘bed to boat’ situation, with a private pier at the end of the garden with well maintained fishing boats, engines and life jackets available to hire.  Check the weather forecast and consult with Gary and Anne about the day ahead or engage in some fishing banter with fellow guests over breakfast.  You will head off, armed with maps and a delicious picnic ready for a great day out.  A ghillie, who will arrive by boat can be organized if you prefer guidance; all in the hope that you can return with an affectionately known ‘corrib brownie’, (wild brown trout)!  For the Coarse Angler, head for the smaller lakes in the area where stands, stiles and footbridges have been incorporated to make the sport a little easier.  Does deep sea angling appeal to you?  The Faherty Costelloe’s can organize a dependable skipper to see you right.  Gary is a keen boatman and runs a ‘lake safari’. Not far to go for the outset, just 50 paces to the waters edge! The day trip includes a bit of fishing, sightseeing and outdoor cooking on the lake!   For your convenience there’s a large fishing hall with rod racks, stove, bathroom, fridge & freezer, sink and hanging racks for wet gear, and most importantly, the weighing scales!!

If you have pre-arranged to have dinner in-house overlooking the lake, maybe Gary, an accomplished cook, will serve up his legendary specialty, ‘corrib fish pie’!!
