Ireland’s largest inland county, Tipperary is a major dairy farming area in one of the lushest parts of the mid-west region, with the River Shannon and Lough Derg running along its western edge.

The Silvermine Mountains and Devil’s Bit provide spectacular drives and walks while the River Suir and the Knockmealdown mountains, as well as the Galtees in the south-west corner, present a vivid landscape. Tipperary was divided into two council areas in 1898 – North Riding and South Riding - with administrative centres of Nenagh and Clonmel respectively, while Tipperary town is a market town of some significance, particularly in the milk and butter sectors.

History and Heritage

Immortalised by the British military marching song “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, the county has historic monuments in abundance and there are remnants of monastic settlements, abbeys and castles all around.

An insight into Irish traditional music, dance and song can be found at Cashel’s award-winning cultural and heritage centre Brú Ború.

Sports and Leisure

Tipperary is known as the Premier County in GAA circles and Hurling is the speciality – the GAA was, after all, founded here in 1844.

Fishing opportunities abound, from the banks of the River Suir to the expanses of Lough Derg.

Tipperary Racecourse caters well the horse-racing fans while greyhound enthusiasts head for Thurles on a regular basis.

Tipperary boasts an eclectic range of walks to suit everyone from families to the adventurous hiker while Timotrec mountain trekking centre caters for all levels of competency.

Tipperary has 11 quality parkland courses, each one offering a unique challenge and a distinct character.
