Roscommon has no coastline but its eastern border is dominated by the shores of Lough Ree and the River Shannon so it has become a popular stop-over for boat-owners and hirers using the waters.

The Georgian town of Boyle is home to Lough Key Forest Park, one of Ireland’s leading lakeside attractions, which offers nature walks, ring forts, cruising, fishing, a bog-garden, an old ice-house, picnic grounds and a fully-serviced caravan and camping site. The Celtic royal sites near Tulsk, Clonalis House at Castlerea – the ancient home of the O’Conor clan – and the Georgian town of Boyle are also well worth a visit.

History and Heritage

Roscommon was badly hit by the Famine and the history of those hard times is on public display at the unique Famine Museum at Strokestown Park House.

The county gave Ireland its first President, the poet and Gaelic scholar Dr. Douglas Hyde, and noted musician/composer Percy French. Details of Dr. Hyde’s contribution to Irish life can be found in the visitor centre at Portahard, Frenchpark.

The Arigna Mining Experience gives an insight into the tough conditions endured by workers in Ireland’s first and last coal mine (which closed in 1990).

Sports and Leisure

Since so much of Roscommon is attached to water, it is a natural haven for anglers and boat-owners.

Walking, trekking or cycling are ideal ways to see the delights of Roscommon and there are plenty of well-laid out and marked routes to follow.

Golf is also big in Roscommon with some splendid courses and there are plenty of horse-racing enthusiasts drawn to Roscommon Racecourse throughout the year.

On the food front in Roscommon, The Old Fort in Shannonbridge, Italia at Knockvicar and Keenan’s Bar & Restaurant in Tarmonbarry, The Stone House Café of Boyle, Gleeson’s (Roscommon) and the Abbey Hotel Restaurant, Roscommon Town come highly recommended.

If you are looking for atmospheric pubs, then M.J.Henry in Cootehall, Moving Stairs Pub, Wynne’s Bar and Clark’s (Boyle), J.J.Harlow’s (Roscommon), and Hell’s Kitchen (Castlerea) are top of the class.

And if you need to rest your head at night, there are plenty of excellent B&Bs around the county.
