Explore County Clare

Explore the historical places and wonderful sights of County Clare

County Clare is an area of Ireland steeped in history with natural landscapes, seascapes, cliffs and lakes that attract thousands of visitors every year. People holidaying in Ireland are able to hire a car from Dublin and visit some of County Clare’s most popular attractions.

These include the Cliffs of Moher, which lie just south of Doolin, a small port village and are one of the most interesting areas of The Burren area. The cliffs ascend more than 700 feet above the ferocious Atlantic Ocean and stretch five miles along the west coast of Clare, from Hag’s Head to just beyond O’Brien’s Tower. This is where many people go to enjoy some of the best views out to sea and on clear days, you can see as far as the Mountains of Kerry, Connemara and the Aran Islands.

The Cliffs of Moher are part of The Burren area, which is 500 square miles of karstic limestone and is located in the northwest of County Clare. It is a popular sanctuary for ecologists and botanists thanks to the unique rock formations and plant life that grows there. The surface of the Burren is made up of gray rock and features long parallel grooves, known as grykes. When rainwater filters through the porous rocks to the lakes and caves underground, the water starts to swell and overflows, producing large lakes that soon disappear when the rain stops.

The ‘Burren Way’ is a 26-mile long sign posted walk that starts at Ballyvaughn and leads to Liscannor, taking visitors on a journey to discover the beginnings of ancient civilisation. Along the route, people can witness stone dolmens, churches, ring forts, monasteries and holy wells.

Also situated in County Clare is Bunratty Castle, one of Irelands most complete and authentic 15th century medieval castles, which boats a long and bloody history. The Norman design with later Gaelic tower houses adds an interesting combination of styles at the fort, which is furnished with a collection of medieval artwork, furniture and ornate carvings. Visitors are able to enjoy tours during the day and a four-course medieval banquet and entertainment in the evenings.
